Join Pearl River Mart and Chelsea Market this AANHPI Heritage Month for a unique exhibit that pays tribute to the life and legacy of Hollywood's first Asian American movie star, Anna May Wong. Our feature exhibition, entitled "Not Your China Doll: Art Inspired by Anna May Wong", is curated by Katie Gee Salisbury and showcases the works of talented artists including Mina Chacko, Helen Chang, Felicia Liang, Tiffany Liang, Linda Sandoval, and Elizabeth Yoo.
Explore a range of mediums, from oil paintings to digital art pieces and collages. This homage to Anna May Wong aims to celebrate her incredible journey from a Chinese American family in Los Angeles to stardom. It also sheds light on her struggle against Hollywood's stereotyping and racism.
Alongside the main exhibition, don't miss the two exclusive installations. "Not Your China Doll: A Retrospective of Anna May Wong's Trailblazing Career" will be on display at Pearl River Mart's Soho gallery from May 1 through Sept. 8, 2024, featuring archival photographs, classic film clips, and an interactive timeline.
In partnership with the Meatpacking Business Improvement District, Pearl river Mart will also showcase "Young Hollywood Was Asian: The Pioneers Who Made Motion Pictures". Witness the highs and lows of pioneering yet lesser-known AAPI figures in Hollywood through archival photographs placed on outdoor tables for the whole month of May.
The exhibition will run from May 1 to 31 at Chelsea Market. Artworks will also be available for purchase. If you need any additional info or have purchasing inquiries, please contact Angela Tung at angela@pearlriver.com or Joanne Kwong at joanne@pearlriver.com.
We hope this event helps strengthen Anna May Wong’s legacy while educating and inspiring our community.
