Joey Bats Cafe

After noticing the lack of Portuguese cuisine in New York City, Joey Batista decided it was time to change that. The son of Portuguese immigrants, he started selling his pastéis de nata at street fairs around New York in 2016, before opening his first cafe in the Lower East Side. An iconic part of Portuguese cuisine, pastéis de nata are creamy, custard tarts that were created in Lisbon in the early 1800’s and are now known as the country’s most popular pastry. Joey Bats Café’s traditional “natas” are light and flaky shells filled with rich, vanilla-spiked custard filling before being baked, caramelized, and served warm with a dash of cinnamon and powdered sugar.
